A Burbank police officer who was on duty at the Pasadena Marathon kicked down a door and pulled a man out of a burning house Sunday, authorities said.
The house fire in the 1700 block of East Del Mar Boulevard, near Pasadena City College, started just before 7 a.m. starting gun for the 5k race associated with Sunday's marathon, said Pasadena fire spokeswoman Lisa Derderian.
Officer Kerry Schilf, a 17-year veteran with the Burbank Police Department, was handling traffic control during the race Sunday when he heard about the fire over the police scanner.
Schilf ran to the home a block from the race course, kicked down the door and pulled the homeowner to safety, according to Burbank police Sgt. Darin Ryburn.
The 66-year-old homeowner suffered smoke inhalation and was treated at the scene. Three cats died in the blaze and one was revived by paramedics.
The cause of the fire, which was put out in 15 minutes, remains under investigation.
