L.A. Fire Captain Dies In Motorcycle Collision

LANCASTER A Los Angeles County fire captain on a motorcycle was fatally injured in a collision with a pickup truck in Lancaster, a sheriff's lieutenant said Sunday.

The accident occurred at 70th Street West and Avenue I about 9 p.m. Saturday, said Lt. Stefanie Fredericks of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Lancaster Station.

The 42-year-old driver of the Chevrolet pickup apparently pulled into the intersection in the path of the motorcycle, which then struck the pickup, she said.

The sole occupant of the motorcycle, 55-year-old fire Capt. John Ellis of the Los Angeles County Fire Department, a Quartz Hill resident, was taken to a Antelope Valley Hospital where he was declared dead, Fredericks said.

No one in the pickup was hurt, she said.
