Nurses Claim Irvine Hospital Has Faulty Drug Pumps

IRVINE, Calif. (AP) ― The California Nurses Association claims the University of California, Irvine Medical Center is using faulty pain-control pumps that have caused drug overdoses in patients.

A complaint filed with state health officials on Thursday claims there have been five accidental overdoses since last year, and one patient wound up in intensive care.

None suffered lasting problems.

Hospital spokesman John Murray says nursing errors caused three of the overdoses. He says no malfunctioning pumps are still in use and safer models are being phased in.

The hospital has had other controversies. In May, the state fined it $50,000 for violations that caused a patient death. And last year, federal inspectors cited dozens of problems regarding patient care and procedures.
