At Least 17 Farmer's Markets Are Under Quarantine

LOS ANGELES (CBS) ― At least 17 Farmers' Markets are under quarantine after Mediterranean fruit flies were found in a backyard near Interstate 10.

Farmers selling fruit and vegetables within the quarantine zones of Santa Monica, Culver City, Venice, Marina del Rey and Westwood are now required to net their products and dispose or donate any produce that is not sold.

Customers are not permitted to take purchased produce out of the market's quarantined zones.

The quarantine could potentially last as long as 7 to 9 months depending on how fast the California Department of Food and Agriculture can eliminate the pests.

Those who do buy compromised produce are told to seal it in a plastic bag and dispose of it in the trash. Do not use it for compost.

Produce covered by the quarantine includes major fruit crops and some vegetables, however, flowers and most veggies, such as lettuce, carrots and cucumbers, are not affected.
