Police say an El Monte third-grader will face charges for bringing a gun to school and accidentally firing it into the ground.
Police say the 9-year-old found the 22-caliber automatic pistol in his grandmother's home, hid it in his backpack and fired it as classes were letting out yesterday at Baker Elementary School.
Police say hundreds of students were lined up on an outdoor basketball court when the boy pulled the gun from the pack and inadvertently pulled the trigger.
No one was hurt.
Detectives who interviewed the boy say he didn't intend to harm anyone and brought the gun to school to show off.
Police say the district attorney's office will decide whether to charge the boy's grandmother with storing the gun negligently.
