California Highway Patrol officials report one person was killed this morning when the driver hit a light or telephone pole just off the Moreno Valley (60) Freeway.
Officials believe the vehicle was speeding. After the car hit the pole, it burst into flames.
The deceased was a 20-year-old Redlands man, according to officials.
The crash was reported at 6:14 a.m. -- about two minutes after it occured -- on the freeway at Frederick St., according to the California Highway Patrol.
Witnesses at the scene reported that the older model, red BMW was traveling at a high rate of speed and swerved off the freeway into the brush at the side of the roadway, hitting a pole.
A CHP dispatcher confirmed that the one man was dead, but it was unclear if he was traveling alone or if there were any other confirmed injuries.
Officers closed all lanes except the carpool and number one lane as investigators worked at the scene trying to determine the cause of the crash.
