Deputies Fatally Shoot Man Wielding Machete

ROSEMEAD, Calif. (AP) ― Los Angeles County Sheriff's officials say deputies shot and killed a man in Rosemead who threatened them with a machete and a baseball bat.

Deputy Byron Ward says two deputies were responding to a call Sunday from the father of 22-year-old Ernesto Castaneda, saying his son was on drugs and wielding a machete.

Ward says both deputies fired and Castaneda was hit in the torso after he refused to drop the weapons then charged at them.

Castaneda died at a hospital soon after.

Ward would not say how many shots were fired.

Court records show Castaneda was convicted last year of evading arrest and being under the influence of alcohol or drugs in a vehicle.

Rosemead is about 11 miles east of downtown Los Angeles.
