A badly decomposed body was found behind a strip mall under construction in Santa Clarita Monday, and detectives were trying to determine if the remains were those of a missing 18-year-old Newhall woman.
A gardener discovered the body shortly after 1 p.m. outside the mall, located along the southbound Golden State (5) Freeway at the ramp to Henry Mayo Drive, Deputy Lillian Peck said.
A law enforcement official said "it is possible" the body belongs to an 18-year-old woman reported missing on Oct. 26. Furthermore Monday, officials said the girl may have committed suicide.
Investigators said they won't contact Kennemore's family until Coroner's officials can positively identify the body.
The Newhall resident was last seen at 4:20 p.m. Oct. 26 walking eastbound on Hasley Canyon Road, according to deputies at the Santa Clarita Valley sheriff's station.
The missing woman, who suffers from a developmental disability, had just gotten off a Santa Clarita Transit bus just east of Cambridge Avenue, deputies said.
The Los Angeles County Coroner will make the final determination about cause of death.
