Mudslides are not the only concern associated with the coming rain storms. U.S. Coast Guard officials in Los Angeles Wednesday warned recreational boaters to stay in port Thursday and over the weekend due to rough seas.
"Recreational boating is not advisable for the next couple of days," said Coast Guard Lt. j.g. Andy Munoz. "Those who do plan on boating should tell someone where they are going and make sure they have their required safety equipment, such as life jackets for everyone on board and signal flares."
All oceangoing vessels should also be equipped with a VHF radio, and an emergency position-indicating beacon, or EPIRB.
The rain is expected to arrive as early as Thursday evening, with gale-force winds gusting up to about 40 mph and a northwest swell up to about 7 feet.
The National Weather Service reports that a second low-pressure system, due to arrive Friday, could produce gusts up to about 55 mph and swells up to 10 feet. Isolated thunderstorms and waterspouts also are possible.
All together, up to 3 inches of rain could fall in the Los Angeles basin, and as much as double that could fall in the mountains on south-facing slopes.
