Judge's Exit May Undo Deal In Clergy Abuse Cases

LOS ANGELES (AP) ― Alleged victims have reacted angrily to news that the departure of a key figure in a record 660 million dollar clergy abuse settlement with the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles could derail the release of priests' confidential files.

The alleged molestation victims have planned to protest Friday outside a courthouse where attorneys are to hold a post-settlement hearing after learning of the developments from an Associated Press article.

The sudden recusal of a retired judge unanimously selected to review the priests' files has threatened to undo the fragile deal and could send both sides back to court for months.

The recusal comes more than a year after the agreement was announced.

At the same time, an attorney who has been paid by the church to defend accused clergy is fighting to keep those records sealed -- and plaintiffs accuse the archdiocese of using him as their proxy.
