A California Highway Patrol officer helped deliver a baby girl Tuesday night on the side of the I-10 Freeway outside downtown Los Angeles.
CHP Officer DeShawn Cobbs and his partner were reportedly helping Caltrans in a maintenance closure on the eastbound San Bernardino Freeway, east of Alameda Street at about 11:25 p.m. when a car pulled into the blocked-off area.
The driver, who was the sister of the pregnant woman, called out to the officers that her sister was in labor, Cobbs said.
"When I got to the car, the woman was wincing in pain the backseat," he said.
"She gave one good push and the head came out, and after another push the baby, a girl, came through," Cobbs said.
The baby was delivered in about two minutes.
The newborn and mother appeared to be healthy as paramedics took them them to a hospital, he said.
Cobbs told reporters, who were at the scene, that he was in the delivery room for the birth of his two children, but this was a first for him.
"You know what, I was nervous, but they trained us on how to do it. I remembered everything, so I did what I was trained to do," he said.
