Deputies Collect Evidence In Chino Bystander Death

1 Killed, 3, Including Cop, Shot In Chino Gunfight

CHINO, Calif. (AP) ― Authorities said a 23-year-old bystander, who police mistakenly believed was a robbery suspect, was killed by Chino officers during a shootout at a pizza parlor.

Officers and two armed robbers exchanged gunfire at Papa John's Pizza on Sunday night in Chino.

Daniel Balandran of Rubidoux died at the scene after he was shot by officers.

Chino police said he was ruled out as a suspect late Monday afternoon based on the statements of witnesses and officers.

Several rounds were fired between police and suspects Edward Cisneros of La Mirada and Joel Anthony Jaquez of Hacienda Heights.

Police said both were hospitalized with critical injuries.

Officials said a Chino police officer also suffered gunshot wounds but is in stable condition.

Sheriff's deputies are collecting evidence at the pizza parlor.

Chino police spokeswoman Michelle Van Der Linden says San Bernardino County sheriff's deputies are gathering stray bullets and other evidence to try to recreate the shooting.

She said it's still unclear why officers fired at Daniel Balandran of Rubidoux.
