A former LAPD officer was arrested early Tuesday after a nine-hour standoff with SWAT team.
Andrew Conly, of Chatsworth, had refused to hand over his son, 5, to his ex-wife in accordance with a custody agreement. SWAT team members surrounded the man's home until he eventually surrendered.
That standoff began around 1:30 p.m. Monday in Hanna Avenue, near Topanga Canyon Boulevard. It ended at 11:05 p.m., according to Lt. Bill Maarschalk of the Los Angeles Police Department's Devonshire Station.
The child was unharmed and reunited with his mother, he said.
Conly, 36, who served as a Los Angeles Police Department officer for one month in 1994 under probationary status before resigning, barricaded himself and his son inside the home, Maarschalk said.
A neighbor reported hearing Conly's ex-wife banging on Conly's door hysterically, looking for the boy. Conly reportedly normally has custody of the boy from Thursdays to Sundays.
Conly was booked early Tuesday morning and placed in an LAPD jail. His bail was set at $50,000, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
Police were at the home Sunday and Monday trying to persuade Conly to hand over the child to his mother, Maarschalk said, adding that a warrant for his arrest was obtained Monday.
KCAL 9 reported that there were at least 30 SWAT members deployed in the standoff and that neighboring homes were evacuated.
