Suspect Shot During Police Chase

ONTARIO, Calif. (AP) ― Authorities say police have shot a 22-year-old after the man tried to run officers over during a chase.

An Ontario police spokesman said Steven Michael Martin of Upland did not pull over after officers tried to stop him for a traffic violation just after 7 p.m. Tuesday. Police say they approached Martin's car after it collided with a median, and Martin accelerated the Chevrolet Impala back toward the officers, who fired into the vehicle.

The car drove off and came to a stop a few minutes later after running into another curb. Police said Martin and his female passenger were taken into custody.

Police said Martin was treated for a gunshot wound to the upper body and later booked on two counts of attempted murder on a peace officer. He had been wanted on a no-bail warrant for indecent exposure and is a registered sex offender.
