Car Jumps Curb, Bursts Into Flames

LOS ANGELES A teenage motorist ran her car into a curb Thursday morning and suffered major injuries after the car launched into the air and landed in an oil field and caught fire in an unincorporated area of Windsor Hills, authorities said.

The accident on South La Brea Avenue at Northridge Drive was reported at 12:18 a.m., California Highway Patrol Officer Alex Gonzalez said.

A girl, believed to be 16-years-old, was apparently driving down Northridge Drive, crossed La Brea Boulevard and hit a curb, which sent the car airborne until it landed in an oil field, a CHP officer reported. After the car came to rest, it caught on fire, the officer added.

Two witnesses reported that the car had been speeding down Northridge Drive, which is located on a steep hill.

The victim was hospitalized with major injuries, Gonzalez said. Her condition was not immediately known.

The circumstances surrounding the crash were under investigation.
