VMA Comeback For Spears With 'Video Of Year' Award
HOLLYWOOD
Britney Spears made a triumphant return to the MTV Video Music Awards Sunday night, picking up three "Moonmen" awards for Best Female Video, Best Pop Video and Video of the Year for "Piece of Me."
The pop star, whose high-profile partying, divorce and child custody battle with Kevin Federline has kept the paparazzi buzzing, was widely ridiculed for appearing to be unprepared and out of shape during a live dance number that opened last year's award show.
Sunday night she received a standing ovation when she appeared on stage at Paramount Studios -- the first time the ceremony has been held in Southern California since 1998.
She beat out Jonas Brothers, Chris Brown, Pussycats Dolls and The Ting Tings to win the Moonman for Video of the Year.
British comedian-actor Russell Brand served as host. Performers included Kid Rock, Lil Wayne, Jonas Brothers, Rihanna, Pink, T.I. and Paramore.
Other pop culture figures who served as presenters included Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps, "Hannah Montana" star Miley Cyrus, Lindsay Lohan, Scarlett Johansson and the cast of the upcoming film, "High School Musical 3."
The awards were last held in Southern California in 1998 at the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City. Since then, the ceremony was held six times in New York City, twice in Miami and once in Las Vegas.
