The entire northbound side of Interstate 15 in Rancho Cucamonga had to be shut down while a helicopter landed on the freeway to airlift an injured truck driver whose tractor-trailer ran off the freeway and tumbled into a ravine.
The California Highway Patrol said the big rig ran into the area between the freeway's two sides at about 5:30 a.m. Wednesday, forcing the shutdown of two southbound lanes for an expected two hours.
An hour later the whole northbound side -- one of the Los Angeles area's primary routes for holiday getaway traffic -- was closed for the helicopter, but reopened minutes later.
Details on the truck driver's condition were not immediately available.
