Girl, 12, Shot In Head, Alleged Gunman, 17, Caught

BANNING, Calif. A 12-year-old girl shot in the head underwent surgery at a trauma center, and the 17-year-old alleged gunman was in custody, Banning police reported on Monday.

The girl, whose name was not released, was wounded shortly before 10 Sunday night in the 1500 block of East Jacinto View, according to a statement released by Detective Robert Fisher.

She remains hospitalized at Riverside County Regional Medical Center, but a condition report was not available.

The boy, whose name was withheld because of his age, was booked into Juvenile Hall on suspicion of negligent discharge of a firearm, according to Fisher, who could not be reached to elaborate on the circumstanes of the shooting.
