Police said only an unarmed elderly man was inside a house in Arcadia, where for much of the night and morning they believed a man in his 20s was holding and threatening three people with a gun.
Police Lt. Bob Anderson told a local news station that the elderly man came out of the house early Monday some seven hours after police arrived.
Officers found no one else inside.
Anderson said police believed the gunman they were seeking and the people he threatened had left the house before officers arrived.
A police SWAT team and sheriff's negotiators had been at the house since about 11 p.m. Sunday after getting a report of a man inside with a handgun threatening to kill himself and three others.
A neighbor's house was evacuated.
