L.A. Animal Control Spends Millions To Upgrade

LOS ANGELES The Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control will add 26 staff positions this year and spend millions of dollars on construction, repairs and improvements to its facilities, mostly in the Antelope Valley, it was announced Wednesday.

The department is entering into the third phase of a multi-year improvement program begun in 2001, according to Marcia Mayeda, director of Animal Care and Control.

Some $1.7 million in repairs will be made to all six county animal shelters; $5 million will be spent to construct three spay/neuter clinics; and $15 million will be earmarked for improvements to animal care facilities in the Antelope Valley.

Rapid population growth in the Antelope Valley has "placed service pressures on the 1950s-era shelter that it was not originally designed to address," Mayeda said in a statement.

The first phase of the improvement program involved an overhaul of the department's policies and procedures, while the second addressed issues raised by an independent review.
