Jet Evacuated After Emergency Landing At LAX

 SLIDESHOW: Inside An Airplane Emergency

LOS ANGELES (CBS) ― Passengers have been evacuated by inflatable chutes from an American Airlines jetliner after an emergency landing at Los Angeles International Airport.

American Airlines spokesman Tim Wagner said Flight 31 bound for Honolulu departed LAX at 8:48 a.m. Shortly after takeoff, the pilot reported a "odor and possible haze in the passenger cabin," and declared an emergency, Wagner said.

Fire crews at the scene reported that six people, including one child, suffered minor injuries during the evacuation. They were all treated at the scene. No sign of fire was found aboard, Humphrey said.

Firefighters were on hand to help the 188 passengers as they slid down two emergency chutes aboard the plane. The airport reports smoke was detected in the cabin before the landing.

Wagner said airline officials were trying to determine the source of the problem. The airline was making arrangements for another aircraft to take the passengers to Honolulu, and that would likely be finalized early Tuesday afternoon.
