Jet Makes Emergency Landing At LAX

A HazMat Situation Was Declared In The Miami-Bound Plane's Cockpit

LOS ANGELES (AP) ― Authorities say an American Airlines jet made an emergency landing at os Angeles International Airport after the pilot reported smoke and the smell of fuel in the cockpit.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor says American Flight 442 was carrying hazardous material in its forward cargo area, but it was unclear if that material was the source of the smoke.

The Boeing 757 was en route from San Francisco to Miami when the pilot declared an emergency, diverted to Los Angeles and landed shortly after 2 p.m. Monday.

The passengers were taken off the jet without incident.
