Celebrated Vintner Robert Mondavi Dead At 94

BERKELEY (AP) ― California winemaker Robert Mondavi has died at age 94.

A spokeswoman for the Robert Mondavi Winery says the pioneering vintner died peacefully at his home in Yountville Friday.

Mondavi is credited with helping put California wine country on the global map.

He traveled the world into his 90s, promoting the cultural, social and health benefits of wine.

Mondavi started his own winery in 1966 and used innovations such as cold fermentation and stainless steel tanks to build the company into a thriving business.

But in recent years the winery struggled with growing competition and other forces. In 2004, the company accepted a buyout worth $1.3 billion from Fairport, N.Y.-based Constellation Brands.
