Winds with gusts up to 80 mph blew into the valleys, mountains and coasts of Southern California Wednesday night, and a wind warning will continue until 3 p.m. Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.
Even after the wind warning ends Thursday, strong winds will continue at least through Saturday, said Weather Specialist Stuart Seto.
Winds approaching 83 mph were recorded in La Crescenta on the southern side of the San Gabriel Mountains after 8 p.m., and similar speeds in portions of the Angeles National Forest.
In the Newhall Pass and portions of Malibu winds approached 60 mph. High winds will not come to the Antelope Valley, Seto said.
Gusts up to 70 mph hit the canyon areas of Orange County and in Santiago Canyon in Orange and forced firefighters to help free about 30 motorists who were trapped by downed power lines.
"We managed to have the cars back out and no one was injured," Orange Fire Department Capt. Ian MacDonald said.
The downed power lines were first reported shortly before 8 p.m., MacDonald said.
Sustained wind speeds reached 40 mph in the affected areas, Seto said.
"These Santa Anas are cold air coming down from Canada, getting mixed in with some of the high pressure pulled into Southern California from the great basin," Seto said.
The winds will gradually decrease, Seto said.
"It won't be a quick decrease, but they will hang around until Friday and Saturday," Seto said.
