Thanks to good timing and good intentions, a pro surfer from Orange County was in the right place at the right time to help the residents of Padang recover from a devastating earthquake.
Laguna Beach resident Jon Rose, whose father Jack started a nonprofit called
Rain Catcher to help educate villages in Africa on how to catch and filter rainwater, had just launched
Waves for Water, a concept similar to his father's organization. However, Waves for Water brings that education to surf regions, like Indonesia.
Jon Rose and his friends had been surfing for 11 days when the magnitude-7.6 earthquake struck on Sept. 30. Rose had had grapefruit-sized ceramic clay water purifiers from
SurfAid tucked away in a bag on the boat while he surfed.
The filters were a lifesaver for a region of 750,000 people, whose existing water supplies were wiped out in the massive quake.

SurfAid International is also collecting donations to send more water filters to Indonesia.
