Silver Lake Reservoir To Get Refill

SILVER LAKE, Calif. The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power will begin refilling the Silver Lake Reservoir Wednesday, months after it was drained because of a potentially harmful chemical compound was found in the water.

Authorities expect the reservoir to be filled in 15 to 20 days with water from the Los Angeles Aqueduct. The 795-million gallon reservoir provides drinking water to 600,000 residents in central and South Los Angeles.

In October, DWP officials announced the discovery of unusually high levels of bromate in the Silver Lake and Elysian reservoirs. The water supplies were then immediately taken out of service and later drained.

Authorities say people who consumed the tainted water should not experience any health problems. Bromate could increase the risk of cancer if a person drank two liters of the contaminated water every day for 70 years.

Los Angeles City Councilmen Eric Garcetti and Tom LaBonge are expected to join DWP General Manager David Nahai in Silver Lake this morning to launch the refilling process.
