B.H. City Council Approves Waldorf Astoria, Condos

BEVERLY HILLS A proposal to build a Waldorf-Astoria hotel and two condominium buildings on the Beverly Hilton property received final approval Monday from the Beverly Hills City Council.

However, a signature-gathering campaign to stop the project was under way. Opponents have until May 29 to get signatures from 10 percent of Beverly Hills' approximately 20,000 registered voters to force a referendum on the proposal, according to Larry Larson, treasurer of the Citizens Right To Decide Committee.

Larson said he is "very confident" enough signatures will be gathered to place a referendum on the November general election ballot.

The council voted 4-1 Monday, with Nancy Krasne dissenting, to approve a required zoning change.

The project's main facets are a 12-story, 170-room Waldorf-Astoria hotel; a six-to-eight story building with 26 to 36 condominiums; a 16-to-18 story building with 64 to 74 condominiums; and a two-story conference center, according to descriptions provided by city officials.

The project calls for part of the Beverly Hilton with 217 rooms to be demolished, meaning there would be 47 fewer hotel rooms on the property. The closed Trader Vic's restaurant would also be torn down.
