Reporter Taken Off Life Support After Heart Attack

HARBOR CITY (CBS) ― The life of a lifelong storyteller is coming to an end, just days after suffering a heart attack during a soccer game and falling into a coma.

Daily Breeze education reporter Vu Nguyen was taken off life support Friday. Nguyen, who grew up in Westminster after his family fled Vietnam, was 34.

"I never thought I would go through life without him," brother Viet Nguyen said.

Nguyen was playing soccer and was celebrating a second goal when he suffered a cardiac arrest. Doctors said he suffered irreparable brain damage.

Nguyen graduated from Cal State Fullerton with a degree in journalism and had worked at several Southern California publications, including the Orange County Register and the OC Weekly, before landing at the Breeze.

Nguyen's father, Chuyen Nguyen, said his son has always wanted to be a journalist.

"He was passionate about writing and giving a voice to those who do not have a voice," he said.

Nguyen is survived by his wife of six months, Heather Hua, a mother, father and brother.
