A Southern California school district has suspended a 12-year-old seventh-grader for having a piece of chocolate candy filled with a half-ounce of booze.
The student's mother told the Ontario Daily Bulletin her daughter was sent home from Alta Loma Junior High School three days before the winter break after a friend gave the girl a vodka-filled, foil-wrapped candy in the hall on her way to class Wednesday.
Another student apparently saw the girl get the candy and told school officials.
The girl's mother says the school district overreacted and that her daughter didn't eat the chocolate found in her purse.
The girl cannot return to class until Jan. 7 and then must comply with a contract that outlines expected behavior.
