High School Coach Accused Of Van Nuys Sex Assault

VAN NUYS Police on Wednesday announced the arrest of a high school athletic coach on suspicion of sexually assaulting a teenage girl.

Kevin Thomas, 40, a special education teacher's assistant and athletic coach at Birmingham High School in Van Nuys, was arrested Tuesday, said Officer Kate Lopez of the Los Angeles Police Department's Media Relations Section.

And she added that police believe there may be more victims.

"The assault took place between 2004 and 2006, when Thomas was running a private basketball program being held at Birmingham High School," Lopez said.

Lopez said Thomas now works at the high school and just took an additional job as the varsity defensive coordinator at Canyon High School in Canyon Country.

Detectives asked anyone with information about alleged inappropriate contact involving Thomas to call the Van Nuys Station's Sexual Assault Unit at (818) 374-0040 or (818) 374-9500.
