United Airlines is doubling the number of flights out of Los Angeles Palmdale Regional Airport in an effort to lure more Antelope Valley passengers.
United will use smaller turboprop aircraft rather than the jetliners currently serving the high desert airport 60 miles north of downtown Los Angeles. United is the airport's only commercial carrier.
Starting Sept. 3, United will fly two morning flights, one afternoon flight and one evening flight from Palmdale to San Francisco, and two morning and two evening flights from San Francisco to Palmdale.
Palmdale Mayor Jim Ledford says the schedule will increase United's appeal to government, military and business travelers. The north Los Angeles County airport has been struggling to attract travelers since passenger service resumed a year ago.
