Nearly 50 protesters were arrested Friday when Los Angeles Unified School District teachers came together to protest thousands of potential layoffs.
Forty-six people were arrested outside school district headquarters. Teacher's union president A.J. Duffy was among those arrested, according to a Los Angeles police spokesman.
Hundreds of other teachers protested in front schools before classes.
"We're practicing democracy, civil disobedience," United Teachers Los Angeles President A.J. Duffy said before his arrest. "Picketing before work hours and after work hours. That's what the United States was built on."
The union had called for a one-day work stoppage, but LAUSD officials went to court Tuesday and won a restraining order preventing teachers from striking.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge James Chalfant cited student health and safety as the reasons for granting the order.
Duffy said teachers who walk out of work in violation of Chalfant's order could face fines of $1,000 each and possibly lose their teaching credentials.
In response, the union organized one-hour rallies at various campuses before classes began.
