Coroner: Slain UCR Professor Was Strangled

LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) ― Coroner's officials say a University of California, Riverside professor found slain in his Long Beach home was strangled.

Lindon Barrett, a professor of English and African-American studies, was found dead on July 13.

Police say he had been killed several days earlier and his car was missing.

Coroner's investigators had already ruled the death a homicide, but held off on naming a specific cause of death until announcing this week that it was strangling.

A toxicology report also determined there was alcohol and marijuana in Barrett's system.

Police arrested 20-year-old Marlon Martinez of Long Beach after finding him near Barrett's car about 10 miles away from the home and later charged him with murder.

Martinez has pleaded not guilty and is awaiting trial.
