UCI Medical Center Head Steps Down After 8 Months

IRVINE, Calif. (AP) ― The head of UCI Medical Center -- who was brought on after a scandal in the hospital's transplant program -- is stepping down after less than a year for what she says are personal reasons.

Maureen Zehntner told staff members at the University of California, Irvine hospital by e-mail Monday that she would be leaving the job in four months.

A 2005 federal report found that more than 30 people died over a two-year period while awaiting transplants at the hospital, which paid millions to settle lawsuits and had several top officials resign.

Zehntner, the hospital's chief operating officer at the time, became acting chief executive and got the job officially eight months ago.

The 60-year-old Zehntner told staff both her parents had recently died, and her husband was anxious for her to join him in retirement.
