U.C. Faculty Blasts Regents Over Budget Crisis
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ―
University of California faculty representatives are blasting the UC Board of Regents for failing to adequately address the state budget crisis' impact on the 10-campus system.
In an open letter sent Wednesday, the UC Faculty Association accused the regents of inaction when the system faces cuts of more than $800 million as part of the state's effort to close a $24 billion budget deficit.
Faculty leaders are urging the 26-member governing board to hold open, emergency meetings to "explore the implications of the budget crisis for the future of the UC system."
But board member Mary Croughan said the regents have worked diligently on the budget crisis for months, and she doesn't believe an emergency meeting is needed.
The Cal State University system has implemented a 10 percent increase in student fees across the 23 campuses to try and close their budget gap.
