SoCal Mother Pleads Not Guilty In Newborn's Death

ALHAMBRA, Calif. (AP) ― The mother of a newborn girl found dead near a stretch of train tracks in Alhambra earlier this year has pleaded not guilty to murder and assault on a child causing death.

Tonya Mae Schaefer was taken into custody last month after police received a call from a tipster that connected her to the baby discovered March 12 wrapped in plastic shopping bags.

The 41-year-old was identified through DNA tests as the baby's mother.

Police said the child appeared to have been tossed over a fence about 40 feet above the tracks.

Schaefer is being held on $1 million bail. She's scheduled to return to court Jan. 17.
