City Council Okays Plan To Double Parking Fines
LOS ANGELES (CBS) ―
The Los Angeles City Council Tuesday directed the City Attorney's Office to draft an ordinance to more than double the fines for drivers who ignore parking prohibitions during rush hour periods.
Currently, the fine for parking in a red zone is $65, but Councilwoman Wendy Greuel introduced a motion calling for fines of up to $140 for motorists who illegally park in red zones during peak commuting times.
Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's proposed $142 million transportation budget for fiscal 2006-07 sets aside $1 million for a "gridlock tiger team" of traffic officers who would ticket and tow vehicles illegally parked on the city's busiest streets during peak commute times.
If approved by the full City Council, the "tiger team" would start patrolling by July 1.
