Villaraigosa Has 'Tiger Team' Fight Traffic
LOS ANGELES (CBS) ―
A new "gridlock tiger team" was unleashed along Wilshire Boulevard Monday, ticketing and towing vehicles along a 14-mile stretch of Wilshire Boulevard.
The "tiger team," comprised of 15 Department of Transportation traffic officers and 10 tow trucks, will patrol Wilshire Boulevard "from downtown to the ocean" to enforce existing parking laws in an effort to keep traffic running smoothly during peak commute times, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said.
"With these illegally parked vehicles no longer blocking the roadway lanes, motorists will be able to get home to their families faster," Villaraigosa said during a news conference at the intersection of Wilshire Boulevard and Normandie Avenue, one of the city's busiest.
Villaraigosa's $142 million transportation budget for the 2006-07 fiscal year sets aside $1 million to form the "gridlock tiger team" of traffic officers.
