Teachers, Parents Protest LAUSD With Hunger Strike

DOWNTOWN, Calif. (CBS) ― The Los Angeles Unified School District was the target of a hunger strike Tuesday morning.

Several teachers and parents have been fasting for nearly one week to protest how the LAUSD was utilizing federal stimulus money.

Nearly two dozen teachers camped outside of Liechty Middle School in downtown Los Angeles overnight to send a message. The teachers said the two-year-old school would lose 70 percent of its teaching staff as a result of Los Angeles Unified layoffs of 2,500 teachers.

The teachers camped out, because they said, they want the district to use stimulus money from the federal government to fill the multi-million dollar deficit.

Otherwise, they say class sizes will continue to increase and reduce student success.

The camp out was expected to continue through Thursday night at Miguel Contreras Learning Center in downtown Los Angeles.
