Need A Taxi? Feel Free To Wave

LOS ANGELES (AP) ― The wave is coming to Los Angeles -- the kind you use to flag down a cab.

The City Council on Wednesday approved a six-month pilot program called Hail-a-Taxi. It allows cabbies in the downtown area and Hollywood to pick up and drop off passengers in restricted areas such as red zones, and even to briefly double-park.

The idea is to give taxis a bigger transit role in traffic-clogged L.A. Backers say the program gives cabbies more incentive to roam instead of crowding at cab stands.

Council members also say it's a bonus for tourists from other cities who are used to hailing cabs.

The cabs still can't stop in bus areas, cause traffic jams or pose a danger to other drivers.
