2 Girls Allegedly Attack Cab Driver, Die In Crash

Driver Hospitalized In Critical Condition

LOS ANGELES Police say two 17-year-old girls were killed Tuesday morning when they took part in an alleged scheme to rob a taxi driver. The two girls attacked the driver with a box cutter after a man approached the vehicle with a gun, according to the cab driver.

After fleeing in his car, with the women in the back seat, the cab crashed and the women were killed at the scene.

The driver was released from the hospital Tuesday evening with stab and slash wounds to his face.

The teens were identified as Alexous Ann Sandoval and Daisy Orozco, both 17.

According to authorities, the two teens hailed the cab around 12:30 a.m. and rode to the Ramona Gardens housing project in Boyle Heights.

However, when the taxi stopped, a man accosted the cab driver, Javier Hernandez, 40, with a gun, according to Sgt. Lee Sands of the Los Angeles Police Department.

Hernandez sped away and noticed that he was being followed by a black Honda.

Meanwhile, police said, the girls in the cab attacked Hernandez with a
box cutter. "He does have lacerations to the face and some bumps and bruises," LAPD Detective Dewaine Field said.

Hernandez lost control of the cab, which crashed at Medford Street and
Fishburn Avenue in the City Terrace area.

Both girls were thrown from the vehicle and died at the scene, police said.

Early Tuesday evening, two suspects were arrested -- Hector Jasso and
Daniel Martinez, both 20-year-old Los Angeles residents. They were held on suspicion of murdering the two 17-year-olds because their deaths occurred during the commission of a crime, said Officer Jason Lee of the LAPD's Media Relations Section.

They were held without bail, Lee said.

Lee said that the whole thing was a robbery "scheme" involving the girls and the suspects.

Both girls were yelling at Hernandez, telling him he better stop. One slashed him on the right ear and cheek with a sharp object.

The chase ended when the car crashed into a metal post and concrete
barrier and the girls were ejected and died instantly, Lee said.

Hernandez called 911 and as officers pulled up, the Honda approached and three occupants got out and began looking for the girls and the driver.

The three occupants were held, but after officers interrogated them, one
was released.

Detectives learned Jasso was the robbery suspect and the boyfriend of
one of the girls, who were involved in the scheme, Lee said.

It is unknown which of the dead girls was romantically involved with Jasso.
