Sheriff's officials say a 21-year-old man wanted for allegedly robbing 22 taco trucks at gunpoint in East Los Angeles has turned himself in.
Nery Perez walked into a sheriff's station with several relatives Friday, a day after detectives blamed his tagging crew for stealing about $7,000 from taco trucks. Four other young men have been also arrested.
Detectives say Alfredo Magallanes of the Los Angeles Assocation of Lunch Trucks helped convince the truck vendors to report the robberies.
Magallanes says many truck owners were afraid of retaliation or problems with law enforcement and immigration authorities.
He says many mistakenly believe that a zoning rule that requires the trucks to move every hour is still in effect. A judge overturned the ordinance.
