After several hours, firefighters freed two workers who became trapped in a collapsed trench at a Sylmar construction site.
A 40-foot-long trench collapsed in the 15800 block of West Larkspur Street, near the Golden State (5) Freeway, just after 6 p.m., Los Angeles Fire spokesman d'Lisa Davies said.
A worker who had been trapped up to his knees was freed first. He appeared to be uninjured and refused further treatment, Davies said.
Firefighters managed to clear the debris around the second worker to his knees, after initially being trapped up to his waist.
The trench in the front yard of a single-family home was eight feet deep, but urban search and rescue teams with specialized equipment had trouble with shifting 12-foot concrete curbing which moved as they were removing debris.
