An attempted armed robbery suspect was shot by a plainclothes detective who witnessed the robbery Tuesday afternoon, according to Long Beach police.
A plainclothes gang detective was in the area of Pacific Coast Highway and Daisy Avenue when he happened upon a robbery, said Sgt. Dina Zapalski of the Long Beach Police Department.
The detective followed the suspect to the 600 block of West PCH, about a block away, where the officer-involved shooting occurred, she said.
The unidentified suspect, who was shot several times, was taken to a hospital, but his condition was not immediately known, Zapalski said.
She said she did not know the circumstances of the shooting, but no other suspects were believed to have been involved.
Although the suspect was reported to have a handgun, it was unclear if a weapon was recovered at the scene.
