Man Arrested In Deadly New Year's Eve Shooting

STUDIO CITY The suspect in a deadly shooting at a New Year's Eve Party in Studio City was behind bars Saturday, police said.

Gilbert Llewelyn McDonald, 34, of Los Angeles, is accused of killing Felix Lavern Lang Jr., 28, of Los Angeles, around 4 a.m. Thursday in the 3900 block of Avenida Del Sol, police said.

McDonald, who reportedly shot Lang outside the house party during an argument, was arrested Friday afternoon and booked on suspicion of murder.

McDonald, who was serving as a self-appointed bouncer at the party and confronted Lang about not paying for a plate of food. Police said the gathering was organized at a rented home in foreclosure and was promoted as a pay-at-the-door party.

McDonald pulled out a gun when the argument turned into a physical fight. The gun went off when the two men reportedly struggled over it but no one was shot. McDonald allegedly pointed the handgun at Lang moments later and fired at close range, according to The Los Angeles Times.

Lang was a star guard at Los Angeles Valley College and went on to play at Portland State University, according to The Times.

San Fuston, a friend of Lang's, said "his New Year's resolution was to get in shape and get back into playing in Europe," according to The Times.

McDonald was being held at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility on $1 million bail.

Anyone with information on the shooting was asked to call North Hollywood Homicide Detectives Timothy Kirkpatrick or Thomas Townsend at (818) 623-4075 or (877) LAPD-24-7.
