Trash Talk! O.C. Janitors Authorize Strike Vote
LOS ANGELES (AP) ―
Unionized janitors in Orange County have voted to authorize a strike in the midst of a contract talk impasse.
Saturday's vote means union leaders could order their 2,000 members to walk out at any time. A strike would mean dirtier buildings for some major Orange County businesses.
The Fashion Island and Irvine Spectrum malls also would be hit.
In addition, union spokeswoman Gina Bowers says the Orange County Central Labor Council will announce Monday whether it will sanction the strike.
If it does, some 140,000 members of 80 unions would refuse to cross janitor picket lines. That could affect deliveries and trash pickup at the malls.
Meanwhile, a strike authorization vote by 10,000 janitors in Los Angeles County was postponed today. Bowers says the vote was put off because progress was made in contract negotiations.
Janitors in Los Angeles, Orange and San Diego counties and Northern California have been working without contracts since the end of last month.
