The first significant storm of the season swept into Southern California Saturday, bringing with it a lightning fire, flooded arroyos in at least one burn area and several freeway crashes.
The unusual weather included a thunderstorm that issued lightning bolts and caused thunder to echo across the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, where a sell-out homecoming crowd was waiting for the game against the Washington.
Los Angeles fire units reported debris flowing down a fire-scorched canyon near Porter Ranch were threatening a bridge. A lightning strike in Chatsworth ignited an unoccupied house near a fire station, causing $13,000 in damage.
The California Highway Patrol says there were a variety of weather-related car crashes on Los Angeles County surface streets and freeways. The crashes included a concrete barrier on the westbound Ventura (101) Freeway, just west of Balboa Boulevard, and a Ford sports utility vehicle that flipped over into a few lanes of the westbound Foothill (210) Freeway at Pennsylvania.
