School Official To Stand Trial In Student Sex Case

LOS ANGELES (AP) ― A former assistant principal has been ordered to stand trial on charges of having illegal sexual contact with three teenage students.

An 18-year-old girl testified at Steve Rooney's pretrial hearing Thursday and said she had a sexual relationship with him while she was a student at James A. Foshay Learning Center and became pregnant when she was 16.

She said she later suffered a miscarriage.

Police began investigating 39-year-old Rooney in February 2007 after he was arrested for allegedly pointing a gun at the girl's stepfather.

She testified she admitted the relationship to police, but a school administrator advised her to "recant everything."

Shortly after, she denied to a prosecutor that she and Rooney had had sex. No charges were filed. Rooney was transferred to a South L.A. middle school, where he was later accused of molesting two other girls and was arrested in March.
