NTSB Wraps Up Fossett On Scene Investigation

MAMMOTH LAKES, Calif. (AP) ― Debris from Steve Fossett's plane has been removed from the Sierra Nevada wilderness site where it crashed.

Mangled and charred plane parts and other debris were on their way to a warehouse in Sacramento, as authorities wrapped up their on scene investigation today. Investigators plan to examine the debris in an effort try to determine what caused the plane to go down.

National Transportation Safety Board officials say the aircraft was in many pieces. They say that indicates it was traveling at great speed when it crashed into the side of a mountain.

Safety officials are trying to determine if weather played a factor on the day Fossett's plane went down.

It was clear when Fossett took off from a ranch in Nevada the morning of the crash, but large storm clouds were reported over the peaks around Mammoth Lakes later that day.
