A Stanton man arrested for allegedly snatching purses from seven women in a supermarket parking lot since June, but failing to wrest one from a 89-year-old woman, may be linked to 10 altogether, according to the Sheriff's Department.
After the 89-year-old woman was accosted, sheriff's deputies set up a surveillance in the parking lot and arrested Michael Salgado Hernandez, 22, said Jim Amormino of the Orange County Sheriff's Department.
KCAL9's Dave Lopez spoke to the woman who only wanted to be identified as "Sophia."
Hernandez rode a bicycle to the parking lot at the Super King market, 10500 Magnolia St., and allegedly snatched purses from shopping carts while women loaded groceries into their vehicles, Amormino said.
But on Aug. 6, he tried to take a purse directly from the clutches of the 89-year-old woman, Amormino said.
"She was able to fight him off, and he was unable to take the purse," Amormino said.
Hernandez has bailed out of jail, which gives prosecutors about a month
to bring charges, Amormino said.
At least one of the purses Hernandez allegedly snatched had a large amount of money in it because the victim was on the way to the bank but stopped to shop at the market first, Amormino said.
In addition to the seven purse-snatchings in the parking lot and the unsuccessful one, Amormino said, investigators believe they can link Hernandez to two others, one in January and one last year.
